Biography
Born Lancashire, United Kingdom in 1957. Graduated from the Royal College of Art, London, in 1985. Sixteen years as a senior academic in the UK. Currently based in Hong Kong.
“Real places or spaces have inspired or initiated most of my works but they haven’t necessarily dictated the final directions and outcomes of that work. Once a work is underway, other visual, emotional, physical and psychological realms have to be dealt with, whatever the starting point was.
Some of my works are spontaneous renderings of a specific view, a single viewpoint ‘sketch’, but most others are actually a consolidation of multiple views and interpretations from around the same place, so they are of that place, but are not an actual ‘view’.
Here my works since 1977 are grouped according to the key places where I have had a studio, whether in a building or a field. I make works in the studio and ‘plein air’, the latter mostly with watercolour or ink.”
